NEW PLAYWRIGHTING FESTIVALS 2009

We are now asking for pieces to be presented in the 2009 Festival which will form part of the celebrations of 60 years of ‘civic’ theatre in the town by focussing on “Entertainment Past and Present in Derbyshire.” All aspects of the subject will be considered but participants might like to bear in mind

  • Theatres, Music Halls, Cinemas, Dance Halls, Music past and present
  • Local factories/ works entertainment
  • Entertainment in Rural Areas (e.g. Peak District)
  • Sporting events/ Outdoor entertainment

and

  • Performers and people involved in entertainment in the area past and present

Scripts using the above can be in any style, be fact-based or fictional, and should be between 5 and 60 minutes in length. All pieces can be designed to be performed at The Pomegranate Theatre (Proscenium Arch), outdoors (e.g. Street theatre) or in smaller community venues.

SECTION ONE - Scripts for no more than 4 professional actors.

SECTION TWO - Scripts written with young people in mind (e.g. Youth Theatre and local schools) for casts of 6 – 20 performers.

The Closing Date for all entries is 31st March 2008.  Successful entrants will be notified by July 2008 and interested writers may be asked to work with community groups to develop their pieces. Performances will take place in Spring 2009 as part of the Theatre’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

We are particularly looking for participants keen to develop their skills and show an excitement and enthusiasm for the craft of theatre writing. This is a unique opportunity for new writers to work in the professional theatre. Accordingly they will be expected to commit fully to the process including attending some rehearsals and performances of their work.

The Pomegranate is always keen to work with more established writers to ensure that new theatre writing continues to have a home in Derbyshire. For information please contact Carole Copeland at the theatre on 01246 345215 or email carole.copeland@chesterfield.gov.uk
