The Pomegranate is a Victorian proscenium arch auditorium and the country’s oldest civic theatre, providing a year round programme of professional touring theatre and high quality local amateur productions. Our current objectives are to:

  • Provide a balanced programme of cultural activities for the interest and enjoyment of all communities and individuals resident in, or visiting the town, which will strive to achieve high quality arts activity and promote equality and social justice and cohesion.
  • Reach and maintain a high standard of staged events/concerts/productions.
  • Be responsible for promoting innovative work, with the understanding that risks and chances must be taken on occasion in order to move forward.
  • Develop existing opportunities for active involvement; create new opportunities; encourage greater participation (from those already involved), and encourage participation by people not currently served.
  • Fix charges at a level that will as far as is possible ensure the maximum usage and accessibility of facilities / programmes / product provided.

The Pomegranate is a professional facility working year-round to achieve these aims and because of the need to balance the amateur with the professional productions we tend to have more requests for places than we have space available. As a result we try to do split week programming where possible, with amateur presentations at the start of the week and professional at the end. A glance a t our current programme will show that where amateur companies are presenting full-scale (usually musical) shows they are incorporated into the weekly drama season. There are many Chesterfield based societies with longstanding associations with the theatre, which get ‘first bite at the cherry’, but we are always delighted to try and accommodate new groups.  Our main drama season runs from September to May, with the majority of hirings taking place in June and July so the more flexible groups can be flexible with their performance dates the more likely they are to get a slot in the programme.
